Chess next move calculator
Show it any position and it gives the three best moves, with the evaluation each one leads to. Free, no sign-up, no ads.
How to use it
- Get your position on the board. Make the moves by dragging pieces, or paste a FEN, a whole PGN or a plain move list. Cmd or Ctrl with V works anywhere on the page, no box needed.
- Read the arrows. The three best moves appear as arrows, each ending in a pad with the evaluation after that move. A dashed arrow is a quick first guess; it turns solid when the full search finishes.
- Play one. Click a move's pad, or press Play best. The move list keeps the game, and the arrow keys step back and forth through it.
- Want a sharper idea? Set Last slot to Sacrifice, pawn up or Sacrifice, piece up. When a move gives up material and still keeps the position equal or better, it takes the third slot.
- Position from a book or a screenshot? Switch to Set up: place pieces anywhere, choose who is to move and the castling rights, and the analysis follows.
- Want a game instead? Challenge me lets you pick White, Black or Random and play the engine from the start, with no hints.
What is doing the thinking
An engine I wrote myself, first in Python and then ported to Rust. It searches the position on the server; there is no AI model or outside service involved. Measured over 171 games against Stockfish at fixed strengths, it plays at roughly 2,470 to 2,620 Elo. Stockfish itself is far stronger, so for a world-championship-level second opinion use it; this one is fast, free and explains itself with an evaluation on every move.
Engine time is capped per visitor and per day to keep the server free, so on a busy day it may ask you to come back tomorrow.
